Theological Conversations with the Boys

Had two fairly deep conversations about spiritual stuff this Christmas break. Somehow we got on the topic of Christmas presents. I asked the boys if they earned their presents. They said no. I told them that Christmas presents were part of the celebration of Jesus' birthday, but that they were also symbols of grace- getting something we don't deserve. I explained that human beings don't deserve to go to heaven, but because Jesus was born and died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins, we get the free gift of eternal life with Him. I think it stuck because the next day I asked them what Christmas presents were a symbol of, and Grayson said, "Grace!"

The next conversation was with Jeremy. He asked who the oldest apostle was, and I told him that I didn't know and that this was a very good question. I told him the one who lived the longest was John. I've talked to the boys about John before. I told them how it was cool that time travel was definitely possible because an angel took John from the island of Patmos into the future to watch the events of the book of Revelation unfold. This conversation happened after we watched Left Behind.

I told Jeremy that all of the apostles were martyred except for John. Whenever I think about how dedicated the apostles were to the cause of Christ, I am very humbled- makes all my striving and frustrations with life so very trite.

I found this great webpage about the apostles. You can find out what happened to each of them. http://www.about-jesus.org/martyrs.htm
