The Hypnotic Power of tv

No matter where Gray is, if he hears Barney on the tv, he immediately comes running. If Barney is singing, he starts clapping his hands. We've tried to get him interested in other shows- Veggie Tales videos, etc, but he loves Barney. It's a mystery.

On Saturday morning we try to keep the boys on PBS kids because the other cartoons show commercials. Jer has already asked for two toys he's seen on the tv. They are not great toys, and I can tell they are the type of toys that he'll play with twice, and then all the little parts will be scattered around his room. I've tried to get him to understand that, but in his six year old mind he'll never be happy without them. Jon is more reasonable, but still, the best idea is to avoid these persuasive commercials.

Even now the boys are begging to watch a violent cartoon, and the answer is N-O. So G gave them two reasonable options- 1) watch a different cartoon or 2) clean the family room.

It's true that Jeremy is very single minded when he gets an idea in his head, but this trait can be a good one often.

I used to hate hate hate Barney before I taught children. Then I had to change my mind because children sincerely, genuinely love them. Clearly their parents don't push him on them. I think we tried very hard to keep Daniel away, and yet he loved him too. Truthfully, what is so wrong with a big, dinosaur that says people should love one another and feel loved in return? They'll get more than enough reality and cynicism later in their life for adults to lament these faults.
