February 24, 2002

My nephew Gilbert is the tall kid in the middle. He was a freshman at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and he lived with his sister (my niece), Janet, who was finishing up her undergraduate degree (she is currently finishing her last year at law school in Boulder). They were very close. This picture was taken during a fun trip in the mountains with his friends. On their way back to school his Xterra hit some ice, and he lost control.

My boys would have adored their older cousin. Gilbert would have been so good to them. My sister, Chris, on Gilbert;
"The more we remember Gilbert and the way he lived his life, the more his spirit will live on forever. I have a lot to gain from remembering how he lived his life and his outlook. I think it's more about living life to your fullest and not being afraid than not being serious, because I think that Gilbert did have those kind of deep layers.

Things I know about Gilbert - he was really into hip hop/rap. He wanted to be a music producer or journalist. I personally think he was really creative."

i feel very sad after reading this post. it sounds like your nephew really knew how to make the most of life. but it is quite inspiring to read his mom's perspective on how to deal with the loss.
